Los Baños, Laguna – The UPLB Institute of Cooperatives and Bio-enterprise Development (ICOPED) recently held its annual COOPtulungan as part of ICOPED's 2024 Cooperative Month Celebration Program. This year’s COOPtulungan activity focused on strengthening the capacity of the 5K (Kalikasan, Kalusugan, Kabuhayan, Kinabukasan, Komunidad) Agriculture Cooperative in Daraitan, Tanay, Rizal by providing free training to the cooperative. The two-day training program, held on October 22-23, 2024, covered the Fundamentals of Cooperatives, and Governance and Management of Cooperatives. These trainings are crucial for cooperatives to comply with the requirements of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA). ICOPED is a CDA-accredited training provider. Mr. Paul Kenneth Maghirang, a university researcher at ICOPED, served as the resource speaker for both trainings. He has been actively assisting the 5K Agriculture Cooperative in complying with CDA regulations since its formation in 2017, with the support of the UPLB Economics Society. A Legacy of Cooperative Empowerment ICOPED's COOPtulungan initiative has a history of empowering cooperatives. In 2023, the program facilitated a partnership between Samahan ng Organikong Magsasaka ng Pila Cooperative (SOMAPI) and the Pila Laguna Agriculture Cooperative (PILAC) with the National Cooperative Marketing Federation (NCMF) and the San Dionisio Credit Cooperative (SDCC) to address marketing and production challenges. In 2022, COOPtulungan focused on discussions and Memorandum of Agreement signings with Laguna Prime Multipurpose Cooperative and ERDB Multi-purpose Cooperative to recognize outstanding student thesis work. Through these initiatives, ICOPED continues to play a vital role in fostering cooperative development and empowering rural communities.
