In the recently held 2nd International Conference on Governance and Development organized by the College of Public Affairs (CPAf) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Assistant Professor Ceptryl S. Mina won the Best Paper Award for her presented paper entitled “The COVID-19 Pandemic and its Effects on Cooperatives in CALABARZON, Philippines” under the conference theme of Effects of the pandemic on livelihood.
The results of her study revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic inflicted most of the cooperative-participants and had issues on finance, supply chain disruption, and reduction in net surplus. Respondents agreed that technical and financial assistance are necessary for the cooperatives weather the effects of the pandemic. Although each cooperative has its own risk-mitigating practices, developing their own business continuity plan was seen as an important strategy to help cooperatives build resilience amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The study was led by aProf. Mina, together with aProf. Liezel S. Cruz, both faculty staff from the Institute of Cooperatives and Bio-Enterprise Development (ICOPED). AMQuilloy
